THE JUDAISM OF YESHUA {JESUS}
{A JUDAISM EXPRESSED IN THE HEBREW BIBLE/THE OLD TESTAMENT}
PERSPECTIVE NUMBER 19
GLASS HOUSES
The expression “Those who live in glass houses should not throw stones” having its origin in a first-century encounter, around the year 29, between YESHUA {JESUS} and a group of religious leaders there in the Jerusalem Temple.
THE WOULD-BE STONE THROWERS
After YESHUA {JESUS], that young Galilean rabbi, there in the courts of the Jerusalem Temple, had sat down to teach the people, “the scribes and Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery”, saying to the young rabbi: “Teacher, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery, Now in the law, Moses, commanded us to stone such women, So what do you say?” The young rabbi knowing that those religious leaders were living, as it were, in “glass houses”, being no less sinful than the woman; the young rabbi then saying those immortal words, words that have resounded down through the centuries: “Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her,” and “In response they went away one by one”, those religious leaders acknowledging that they themselves were not “without sin” either {Gospel of John 8:3,4,5,7,9-New American Bible}.
FROM GOD’S PERSPECTIVE
The biblical text makes it clear that no one is “without sin:” “We have sinned and can we be saved? We have all become like an unclean thing, and all our virtues like a filthy rag” {Book of the Prophet Isaiah 64:4,5-Jewish Publication Society Bible}, and, then, he who had been a student of GAMALIEL, Judaism’s great rabbinic teacher, wrote: “There is no one who is righteous; no, not one” {Saul of Tarsus’ {Paul’s} Letter to the Congregation in the City of Rome 3:10-Revised English Bible}.
BECOMING A PART OF THE PERMANENT
In the year before the Roman 10th Legion destroyed the Jerusalem Temple in the year 70, a Jewish author wrote to fellow Jews about YESHUA {JESUS}, that young Judean-born, Galilean-raised rabbi, saying: “He has made his appearance … to do away with sin by sacrificing himself” {Book of Hebrews 9:26-New Jerusalem Bible}, that sacrifice of himself being made during Passover in the spring of the year 30, being made outside of the walls of Jerusalem, there on that hill fulfilling what the LORD, in the previous 8th century, had foretold about His “servant:” “My righteous servant makes the many righteous …. for he exposed himself to death… he bore the guilt of the many … he made himself an offering for guilt” {Book of the Prophet Isaiah 53:10,11,12- Jewish Publication Society Bible}, those accepting that “offering for guilt,” that offering for guilt made by the LORD’S “righteous servant,” being destined to share GOD’S existence, that timeless existence, becoming a part of the Permanent. |
